student_tri.jpg
events.jpg A youth triathlon will be held this summer on Saturday, June 9 at 5:00 p.m.. The triathlon is a joint effort by Central MN Christian (Prinsburg), Community Christian (Willmar), and the YMCA of Willmar. The goal is to promote exercise and healthy habits for the youth in our community.

The event is held in conjunction with a fundraising effort by local athlete, Mike Pluimer, through his entry in the Ironman Couer d'Alene on June 24. Proceeds from the All Student Triathlon will go toward this effort.
All entrants receive a free triathlon t-shirt. Prizes will be awarded for first place in each division (boys and girls separate). Age groups are divided as follows: K-4, 5-8, 9-12. Students can enter as an individual or as a team relay (swim, bike, run).

Detailed information on the student triathlon can be found on the registration form. Scholarships are available by contacting Tim Miller. Questions can also be directed to Tim Miller or posted in the Q&A section of this blog. You will receive more information in the mail once your form is received.

Student Triathlon Q&A

There are many questions you may have while considering to enter the student triathlon. Post your questions here and we will try to answer them as soon as possible. If you need further assistance contact Tim Miller: timm@willmar.com or 320-905-1010

Q: When is the registration deadline?
A: There is no deadline, however there are limited positions available. Register as soon as you can. When you are registered (form is available on this site), you will receive further information by mail.

The following were some questions presented through an email I recieved along with their answers.

1. Is the running part on a treadmill or on the track? The running and biking are actually on courses laid out on local Willmar streets – we have worked with the City of Willmar in planning out a route – it will be blocked off and/or guarded at crossings by a combination of Willmar police and race volunteers.

2. Is there time to change after the swimming event or do the participants run directly from one event to the next? Just outside the pool there will be a transition area with boy and girl changing tents included. After the swim the athletes will go into their tents and change. There will be race attendants in the tents, but parents are encouraged to help their child if they wish. The athlete’s change of clothes, bike helmet, etc will be placed prior to race time in a paper bag with the athletes name on it. It will be placed in the transition area in rows for easy access.

3. Are the girls and boys competing separately? Yes. They will race at the same time, but will be placed seperately – if she wins her age group as a girl, she will win a medal and an iPod Nano

She is looking forward to the event - and so am I! Is there going to be room for parents to watch the event? Yes. The whole start/finish/transition area is a good place to be. There will also be plenty of space along the race paths. The swimming area may be a little more congested, but we will try our best to accommodate everyone.
